What is the Composition and Role of a Local Governing Body (LGB)?
The Local Governing Body’s role is to exercise leadership on behalf of the Trust in the running of one or more than one academy and to provide information to the Board of Directors on the operation and performance of each academy. Governors of a Local Governing Body, except the Principal, serve as volunteers and receive no payment for their work.
The composition of an EFAT Local Governing Body is:
- Sponsor Governors- majority- at least 5 appointed by the Board of Directors
- Parent Governors- Essa Academy-2 parent governors- elected/ appointed by the LGB
- Parent Governors- Essa Primary Academy- up to 4 parent governors – elected/ appointed by the LGB
- Staff Governor- 1- elected/appointed by the LGB
- Principal- 1- ex-officio
- Co-opted Governors- as required- appointed by the LGB
The Trust’s Governors are:
Anwer Ibrahim Patel
Anwer is the managing director of Cohens Chemist Ltd one of the largest independent retail pharmacy chains in the country and has a number of other business interests. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton for services to the community. Anwer is a founding member and a director/trustee of the Essa Foundation Trust and EFAT. He is the Chair of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Local Governing Body of Essa Academy.
Patrick is the Principal of Essa Academy. He is also a Governor.
Ismail has over 25 years teaching experience as a science teacher in a mixed community school in Blackburn. He has served as primary school governors for 20 years. He is also a trustee of a cricket and social club.
Christine is a teacher of business studies and economics at Bolton School Boys Division- an independent school in Bolton. She has held senior leadership positions in schools.
Paul is a teacher of Russian and French at Bolton School Boys Division, – an independent school in Bolton. He is Head of Russian and Head of modern foreign languages and has lived and worked in Japan, Russia, and France.
Nic is deputy head at Bolton School, an independent school in Bolton. He has over 20 years teaching and senior leadership experience in state schools.
Julia has over ten years experience as a teacher and currently works in a secondary school and has been a Middle Leader for seven years.
Julie Parker Julie is a parent governor.
Jordan Turner Jordan is the staff governor.
Neelam Arshad Neelam is a parent governor. She has 3 children at the academy.
Essa Primary Academy
Nigel John Whittle
Nigel is a chartered accountant. He is the finance directors of two large companies and runs his own chartered accountancy practice providing services to the private sector and to public bodies including Local government. He has been a primary school governor for over 10 years. Nigel is the Chair of the Local Governing Body of Essa Primary Academy.
Joanna Louise Atherton
Joanna is the Principal. She is also a governor.
Sofiya is an employee of the Trust and provides student support and creative technology support to students at Essa Academy.
Salmah Bano Akram
Salmah is the staff governor. She has been a teacher for over 9 years working in schools for 6 years and previously in The Renaissance Museum and Gallery Service.
Enid spent 17 years as a teacher and became the Head of Infants in a Radcliffe Primary School. She has also worked as a lecturer in a Further Education College and is now retired.
Aatika is a parent governor. She is a full time mum currently and has worked as a housing services officer for Bolton at Home and as an administrator for Jobcentreplus in the past . Aatika is also a volunteer at a local madressah teaching children of various age groups.

Angela worked as a primary teacher in Bolton for 20 years and held a range of management posts. Latterly, she was responsible for primary/secondary liaison. Angela is now training to be a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist.
Nazida is a parent governor. She is a housewife and mum and is currently working as a casual lunchtime organiser at Essa Primary Academy.
